Spotting the 3 Major Warning Signs That Your Job May Be in Serious Jeopardy

By Jerry Robkoff

You may be one of the thousands of people who are hunkering down, at their jobs, hoping to weather out this economic tsunami. You may be commuting to work each day, wondering if you will still have a job, when you get there. Unfortunately, no matter how comforting prayer may be, it is no safeguard against the economic realities facing so many businesses. Your better option is to prepare yourself for any dramatic career pitfall rather than get blind sided by all this falling debris.

There are three major warning signs you should be aware of. Although none of them, alone, are automatic firing squads, seeing the storm clouds approach will put you in a much better position to make necessary changes, and career decisions.

  1. The biggest warning bell is a merger or acquisition, especially when your company is the one being bought or merging into another larger and financially healthier company. When two similar companies join up, you can be very sure that there is someone, in that other company, who is also doing the same job you're doing. Redundancy is very costly. You can bet one of you is going to be let go. A very wise plan to have is that you may very well be that person who is let go.

  2. Your boss just traded his limo in for a Toyota, the company sold off their time share apartments or your boss has switched from taking his lunch at that fancy bistro, and is now either brown bagging it or visiting the fast food places more regularly. Don't buy the reasoning that he is looking to save some money. He is drastically looking for ways to cut costs, and the next step after that is payroll.

  3. You were once the person everyone visited when they needed information or advice. Now, you're suddenly seeing that they are avoiding you and seeking out someone else. This can be a definite alarm that you may no longer been seen as an integral cog in the machine, and you may be on that pink slip list. This may also manifest in the fact that you're no longer invited to those decision-making and planning meetings. If you're suddenly finding yourself with A LOT of free time, during business hours, you may want to start sending out your resume before the axe comes down.

Don't be caught flat footed and off guard. The sad truth about industry and corporate survival is that there is no longer any deep loyalty given to employees. One can debate, argue, complain, and rant about this, but the fact remains that corporations are far more Machiavellian, now, and everyone is expendable. Job security, when one is in the corporate structure is a myth. It is even more of a fairy tale, considering the economic challenges companies are facing, today.

Keep your eyes and ears open, and update your resume. Being aware and prepared is the best defense and policy in this present day business world.
