Want to Give Back? Consider Doing Pro Bono Work

Every small company interested in charitable donations can have a community impact by doing pro bono work.

There’s an old saying, “In seeking happiness for others, you find it for yourself.” Shaun Walker and Reid Stone find this to be as true in business as it is in life.

The pair co-founded the marketing and PR agency HEROfarm. The company commits to at least one pro bono project a year, and they encourage other small businesses to do the same. In addition to the sense of personal satisfaction, pro bono work can benefit your business with new connections and a positive marketing boost.

“Working with other good organizations only reinforces our reputation and commitment to our values,” Walker said. “People see that your business is about more than the bottom line.”

But how do you know where to begin? Walker said business owners should think about the causes that are important to them. Then, look for local organizations that might be a good fit. “Approach them and ask, ‘How can we help?’” Walker said. “Maybe they need a partner for an event or to raise awareness.” Put the offer out there, and you should be able to find ways your business expertise can benefit local charities.
