Dr. Kessler was born in Charleston, West Virginia. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Kessler has been honorably discharged from the United States Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is a member of the American Society of Hematologists, American Society of Clinical Oncologists, and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He actively supports participation in clinical research through pharmaceutical and cooperative group programs.
