In the old days, all a farmer needed to do to boost his yield was spread around a little fertilizer, add water, and boom – better crops. Unfortunately, just throwing some fertilizer on the ground doesn’t guarantee a better crop. Traditional nitrogen-based fertilizers aren’t able to penetrate the soil to get where they can do the most good. Sitting on the surface, they are often washed away by rains or irrigation, ending up in the ground water supply and causing more harm than good.
