Once suitability for treatment has been identified by Dr. Andrea Kim, patients undergo one ketamine infusion – typically enough to demonstrate whether the treatment is effective – by Dr. Clark Morgan. Texas Ketamine Specialists is unique from other ketamine treatment centers because we are a partnership between a board-certified psychiatrist and a board-certified anesthesiologist. This means that our patients do not just have a competent and careful doctor administering their infusion. They also benefit from the oversight, understanding and guidance of a highly regarded physician specializing in mental health, all while working closely with a patient’s own psychiatrist or referring therapist. Ketamine is a medication that has been prescribed to men, women and children for well over 60 years, primarily as an anesthetic. In 2000, medical researchers discovered that ketamine has a powerful effect on depression, especially in patients resistant to typical antidepressant treatment. Physicians have seen powerful and continuous results of ketamine depression treatment over recent years. These improvements include a lift in mood in as little as a few minutes or hours, a reduction in suicidal thinking and none of the side effects typically seen with classic antidepressants.
