My front door lock has been a pain for months. It's one of those old, brass things that's been on the house since the 70s. You have to jiggle the key, push the door a certain way, and say a silent prayer for it to turn. Last week, it finally just gave up. The key went in, but it wouldn't turn at all. I was completely stuck on the inside of my own house, which was a new and very annoying experience. I called someone up, and he showed up pretty quickly. He took one look at it and just nodded. Yeah, I see this all the time, he said. The old ones get worn out and the tumblers just seize up. He worked on it for a while, and it was clear he knew exactly what he was doing. He ended up having to replace the whole mechanism, but he made sure it was a better, more modern one that was still compatible with my old door . Now, my key turns like butter.
