I believe that Shannon Drehner and her Law Firm took advantage of me and my husband in the middle of our grief over the murder of our son. After months of waiting for the police department to follow through with their promise to thoroughly investigate our son's murder case I had been informed that they were going to submit the case to the DA's office as criminal negligence with no evidence collected other than the suspects supposed confession of accidentally shooting our son. I then stumbled across an ad portraying Shannon Drehner as a "Victim Advocacy Attorney". In the ad it claimed that she worked on the behalf of the victim and victims family and was extremely knowledgeable of the ins and outs of the justice system as she had been both prosecutor and defense attorney. After reaching out to Shannon the expectation was set that she could not guarantee outcome but her and her PI would thoroughly investigate my son's case in all areas that the police department and DA's office were not investigating. Being that the police department had no intent of investigating the case beyond the suspects confession we had been under the expectation that the attorney would be doing extensive investigation. She then stated that we would have to put up a $10,000 retainer in order for her to even look into the case but reassured us that she could be more involved than other attorneys due to her experience and reputation. We had informed her that we did not have a lot of money due to having to bury our son, my mother and care for my father on hospice but that we wanted our son to have Justice. We told her we just wanted the truth and for no stone to be left unturned. She reiterated that they would thoroughly investigate anything the police department was not investigating and that she would do everything in her power to uncover the truth even though she could not guarantee the outcome of the case. As bereaved parents all we've ever asked for is the truth. We believe if the truth comes out then Justice will be done. Throughout the entire process we communicated with Shannon and her PI instead of the police department and DA's office. We communicated via text message, zoom and email. Every communication we had we were cordial and optimistic. We continually requested updates for the information that they were able to obtain and for status of their investigation. Continually we were told that they would have to get back to us. I personally did more investigating then my attorney, her private investigator, the police and the DA's office combined. None of them didn't even know that the suspect was living with the only supposed witness even after it was required by court that there be no contact between the victim family, the suspect and the supposed witness. We don't even live in the area and we were able to investigate more than all of these people who are in the area. Almost eight months have passed and we still have no new information outside of the information that I personally dug up myself. No fingerprints were ever taken, no camera footage looked for, no witnesses were ever questioned, no character witnesses were ever spoke to. Also none of them seem to be concerned with the fact that the suspect had made multiple threatening statements on social media about killing people. My husband and I had collected hundreds if not thousands of screenshots of conversations that we had with people who were close to our son and the suspect. On my final conversation with the PI he verbally attacked me and berated me telling me he worked for Shannon not us. He told me that I was asking the same questions and that he was tired of it. Both Drehner and the PI made comments that they were trying to keep a working relationship with the police department and did not want to create friction. Had drenner told me this in the beginning before wwe hired her we would not have spent $10,000 on an attorney who would basically take everything the police and DA's office said as face value without looking into the situation themselves. Now everyone is stating that it is an accident even though the suspect pulled out a gun aimed it at my son's head and pulled the trigger. Nobody including Drehner have any intention of investigating the case and therefore the initial consultation was misleading, misinforming and misrepresenting. I believe it was intentional so as to take advantage of us and our grief to obtain $10,000. I would not suggest using her or her firm as an attorney as every attorney should have an itemized list of what services they provided and the cost of those services and then any remaining retainer fee should be returned if unused. They did not do anything that was listed in the contract other than be a go-between to relate information between us and the police department / DA's office which we could have done on our own without an attorney. We reached out to Drehner and was told that she would not be reimbursing the retainer fee.
