Contrary to many people's belief, usually utility mark-out is not simply tracing a line using a cable/pipe locator or pushing a ground penetrating radar around. Our in-depth understanding of underlying principles involving subsurface scanning enable us to not only choose the right tools, but also use the tools adaptively to the site condition. The in-depth understanding of geophysics principles, and the proper reasoning based on that, are important for a productive scanning, especially if a site has a rich subsurface infrastructure history. Utility mark-out is a job more for an analyst than for a technician.
