IBIS was founded by sole owner, Barbara Patten, in 1989. Barbara began her business to provide German books for individuals and universities. As the business grew, it was apparent that her customers needed other imports. She expanded IBIS to include French in 1990 and Italian in 2007. In 1999, Barbara moved IBIS to a 15,000 sq. ft. building on the Square in Lynchburg, Tennessee, home of the world-famous Jack Daniel Distillery.
