May 2012 Hernia operations and surgery's by Dr. Todd S. Harris: I am a type II diabetic and have cirrhosis of the liver from massive drinking in my 30-50 years of age. As a result of this bodily abuse I have had ascites that cause accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. Unfortunately there is no cure and a person with ascites must regularly take "water pills", be on low sodium diet and take mineral supplements. Even then there is always fluid buildup that exert pressure on the lining between the body organs (intestine) and the skin. The result is Hernia (Inguinal...around the testicals) and umbilical (belly button). The small intestine wants to push its way out these breaks. Although not painful these swellings and protrusions' grow in size, making a person unable to walk or do daily activities..These conditions adversely affect the quality of life. In some cases, as in mine the small intestine entangled in the umbilical area and closed off the digestive tract which poses a very serious condition...food is entrapped and the stomach wants to explode. Having developed both inguinal and umbilical hernia to a maximum size over a year. I researched the field for surgeons that could repair this ailment. A couple surgeons and Hernia Centers turned me down; considered me high risk for surgery and did not want anything to do with me.
