The last thing you think about when you euthanize your best friend is how his private cremation will be treated. First just picking up your pet's ashes is difficult and brings back sadness and finality. But I have severe complaints and questions about how my dog's body and remains were handled post death. When I picked up his ashes he was disposed of in a plastic "sandwich type" Ziploc bag, which was then put into a velvet bag. There was no death certificate, no date of when he was cremated no signature as to whom (personally did the cremation) and no identification inside the bag. The velvet bag which was not tied shut was tagged with a paper tag and string. But this was the only identification. Inside the bag was the plastic Ziploc bag, which had a hole in it, and a business type card ensuring this was "my beloved pet" however his name was not printed nor was mine; only a generic business card. When questioned the crematory blames the Veterinary Hospital for the puncture to the bag. My question or issue is that if the paper tag came loose or if the plastic Ziploc bag slid out; there would be no way to identify which pet was mine. There was no metal tag used to tag the body, then to be used as identification throughout the process, cremated with the body and cataloged to ensure the identity of the body in case of a problem or question.
