One of Michigan's largest landscape supply yards, offering hardgoods and pond supplies for both homeowners and contractors with outstanding service. In 1918 when Patriarch August Zendt arrived from Switzerland, speaking almost no English, he had a dream of starting a landscape company, and in 1928 he began to fulfill that dream with one small pickup truck. As each of his three sons graduated from MSU with Horticultural degrees, they joined him and built one of Michigan’s most prestigious landscape construction and maintenance companies, Zendt’s Landscaping, which, during its run, won many regional and national awards. From their experience in the construction and maintenance areas, in 1994, Jack and Barbara Zendt saw the need for a supply yard that would provide a wide range of landscape hardgoods, sprinkler, lighting and pond materials. Their idea was to offer quick and efficient service for the contractor, in an inviting and informative atmosphere friendly enough for homeowners too---and, rocks ‘n’ roots was born. Today, rocks ‘n’ roots is a fourth-generation, family owned and operated company, with over 170 combined years of hands-on experience. Several of its employees transitioned from Zendt’s Landscaping and have been with rocks ‘n’ roots from its inception. Located on Van Dyke just south of 29 Mile, it is in an area of amazing growth and very convenient to the Van Dyke Expressway. The first thing a customer will notice outside at rocks 'n' roots is the vast selection. Everything is on display, and much of it is showcased in beautiful paver and flagstone walkways, ponds, waterfalls, bubbling rocks, decorative retaining walls and beds of stone and mulch. With over 40 types of decorative stone, 20 mulches ( bulk and bagged) , topsoil, sand, natural walls, flag and outcropping, to pavers and walls from the most trusted and well-known companies including Belgard, Fendt, Oaks, Rosetta and Unilock, the displays are impressive. Inside the store are veneer samples, water features, pumps, pond kits, chemicals, and transformers, low-voltage lights with a great new displays, sprinkler parts, tools, fittings and so much more-- rocks ‘n’ roots has it all. This year additional outdoor displays have been added, from a mobile display trailer with samples and videos, to outdoor kitchens, pizza ovens and fire ring kits! If August Zendt was here today, he would be extremely proud!
