After calling and leaving several messages over the course of a few months, I finally spoke with the owner, who identified himself as Ed. Instantly, he made some pretty stereotypical assumptions. He immediately began by telling me that he was not the "cheapest" guy in town (so much for customer service). When I explained that I am not simply price shopping but have a new stone wall that I would like to finish off by the holidays so I am prepared to get the work done he then stated his real issue. Ed expressed concern about working in "that area" and asked "is it safe over there?" Then as I expressed my disappointment with his prejudice against working in communities of color and explained that I have worked with numerous contractors (we've had a stone wall built, roof replaced, porches rebuilt, etc.) who had no issues working in my neighborhood, Ed hung up the phone! So much for customer service. Given this clear lack of cultural competency and outright prejudice, I would never recommend giving any business to S & S Welding.
