Dr. Gregory L. Primus is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and founder of The Chicago Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. He is uniquely qualified for sports medicine because of his unlikely alignment of medical training and prior athletic experience. Unlike most physicians in sports medicine, Dr. Primus is a former NFL player, yet even during his football career he always planned to become a medical doctor. Dr. Primus' success on the football field delayed his eventual pursuit of his life passion to become a surgeon, as he went on to play three years in the NFL, one season with the Denver Broncos, and two seasons with the Chicago Bears.
Dr. Primus always considered himself a true student athlete, as he earned a football scholarship and undertook a pre-medical curriculum. He completed a Microbiology degree at Colorado State University while breaking school records for wide receiving. The former earned him an outstanding Student Award and the commencement address for his major. The latter earned him Hall of Fame status for holding unbeatable receiving records for 13 years.
His academic achievement prepared him to enter into the University Of Chicago Pritzer School Of Medicine where he earned his medical degree, followed by completion of his orthopedic surgery residency training. He then went on to complete a fellowship at the Southern California Center for Sports Medicine.
In addition to his sports medicine training, which focuses on arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction of all the major joints, Dr. Primus also specializes in arthritis reconstruction of the knee and shoulder, with a focus on ligament sparing joint arthroplasty.
His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), Cook County Physicians Association (CCPA), National Medical Association (NMA).
Dr. Primus is the team physician for Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, IL and Chicago State University. He also treats athletes and injured workers all around the Chicago-land area.
