Complaint: Contract / Pricing Dispute, Poor Workmanship, Unprofessional Conduct
Our organization contracted with Tom Riley Painting for a roof painting project on 4 of our buildings. The company provided a written quote of $28,000, which we accepted and moved forward with in good faith. This price was based on their own measurements and assessment of the project.
After the contract was signed and agreed upon AND after they had already power-washed one building in preparation for painting its walls, Tom Riley Painting informed us that the actual cost would be an additional $25,000, bringing the total to approximately $53,000. This was a shocking and unacceptable change, especially since the original quote was based on their measurements and professional judgment, not ours.
When our Pastor questioned the drastic increase and asked the company to honor the agreed-upon price, the owner became verbally aggressive, raised his voice, and stated, "Well, sue me then. I have nothing to take."
This statement was deeply unprofessional and inappropriate, particularly when speaking to a client seeking a reasonable and ethical resolution. We were not threatening legal action; we were simply asking the company to stand by their contract and demonstrate basic integrity.
Additionally, the painting work that was completed was extremely sloppy. There was significant overspray on surrounding plants, landscaping rocks, and light fixtures. Even k**ing some of our bushes. We have extensive photographic documentation of the damage and lack of care taken during this portion of the work.
Due to:
The massive and unexplained price increase
The refusal to honor the agreed-upon quote
The aggressive and unprofessional conduct
The poor quality of the work already performed
we no longer felt safe or confident continuing the project with this company. We also did not have the additional funds available, nor would we have proceeded given the breach of trust.
This experience was distressing and disappointing. We believe this behavior reflects a lack of professionalism, accountability, and ethical business practices. We are submitting this complaint to warn others and to seek accountability for how this situation was handled.
