A 22-year-old Brownstown Township man has been arraigned for allegedly hurting a puppy so badly that the animal had to be put to sleep.
Khaled Hussein is charged with one count of killing/torturing and maiming an animal, a felony that carries a maximum punishment of four years in prison, a $5,000 fine and/or 500 hours of community service, plus the cost of veterinary care. The township's interim police chief, Jim Sclater, said a person convicted of this crime may also be prohibited from owning an animal in the future.
According to police, one of Hussein's neighbors called around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 to report seeing the man throw the puppy, a beagle mix named Buster, over a fence.
"He grabbed it by the fur around the neck and the hind legs," Sclater explained. "He was just a little guy."
The dog was taken to Affiliated Veterinary Emergency Service and then to the Livonia Veterinarian Clinic, he continued.
Hussein could not be reached for comment.
"It was determined that his injuries were so extensive that it was in the best interest of the animal to" euthanize it, the interim chief said. "I wish it would have worked out better for Buster. He's sweet."
Hussein was arraigned Monday in 33rd District Court in Taylor and posted his $5,000 bond. A preliminary exam is scheduled for Tuesday.
