Bob, owner of Top Notch came to my home in early December to do the annual maintenance on my Goodman unit. I asked him if he could help me with my propane fireplace and he said he would take a look at it. He told me what part I needed and he came back on Christmas Eve and installed it for me. He waived the 95 dollar service charge, which was very nice of him. I got my electric bill for December and January, both were unusually high. I called Bob and asked him If he could check on my system, I knew something was wrong. He called me at work and told me my compressor had died and I needed a new unit. I asked him if he could replace the compressor and he said if he could have he would have. He had earned my trust so I told him to take care of it. He had given the price to me but quite honestly I was not familiar with the price for these units. I spoke with my maintenance man at work and he told me Bob's price was way too high and that he had just priced new units with three other companies. I tried to call Bob that same morning to cancel the job but he had already taken out my old unit and had the new one on his truck. Do your homework, always get three prices to keep everyone honest. This was a hard life lesson for me to learn, I am too trusting of people. The large amount of money was a hard one to swallow. One of two things, either the Goodman units only last 8 or 9 years or there is a pattern of simply replacing them. My house is seventeen years old. Bob was the original installer for Ryan Homes. My grandmother already replaced the Goodman unit 9 years ago. Bob says it's a dog eat dog world so I guess he is OK with passing that on to his customers. I have switched to another company, even though their service contract is higher, I have a good feeling that I will save money in the long run.
