Before European settlers inhabited the land, the Wickquasgeck Native Americans lived here. They are a part of the Wappingers, which is related to the tribes in Lenape, which is Delaware today. The land was purchased in 1682 by Frederick Philipse. The land was then taken away from his grandson in 1785, during the Revolutionary War. This was done because he sided with the British. It was then sold to local farmers.
