We chose Rachel Williston, CNM,CPM, of A Mother's Love Birth Center to be the midwife for our homebirth. We specifically chose her because of her experience and double certification. We communicated this very clearly to her, and she made it very clear in her responses that she would be in attendance at the birth of our baby.
Several weeks after paying a deposit of hundreds of dollars, Rachel informed us that she was never going to be available to attend our homebirth, due to the fact that she would be on maternity leave. It also turned out that she had failed to disclose that she was one of three midwives at her birthing center who used a rotating on-call schedule, and that there had never been any guarantee that she would be the midwife at our homebirth for that reason, as well.
When asked to refund our deposit, we were informed that the entire amount was a non-refundable "first visit fee." When we argued our case further, we were told by Keith Williston, CFO, that he would no longer discuss the matter with us unless we paid him a fee for "case management - education" of $128/hour. Then he e-mailed us again and threatened that he would bill us at $128/hour for any time spent if we decided to file a complaint.
We have yet to receive any of our deposit back. For these reasons and several more, we highly recommend you hire any one of the dozens of other midwives in the KC area.
