Avoid Schaber Construction like the plague, unless of course you want the plague. I foolishly hired this guy and his helper to install 24 new cabinets (upper and lower) in our kitchen. These are quality cabinets and they came with detailed installation drawings. Other contractors estimated the job at two, maybe three days, tops. Schaber expressed confidence in meeting that timeline. Yes, Schaber has a contractor's license (I checked) a website that looks reassuring and he talked a good game over the phone. Still, it took Schaber and his helper three days (17 hours!) to install just four lower cabinets and half-install a fifth one. With nearly 20 cabinets remaining, I voiced my concern over his glacial pace of work and suggested something be figured out. His answer was to demand payment and walk off the job. I ended up paying him nearly $900. I ignored obvious red flags such as his refusal to give me a bid price for the entire job (a standard in construction), his insistence on working at an hourly rate (he was easily on track to bill more than 100 hours) and not checking his resume (which I later did; you can learn a lot from a few phone calls). The eventual installer who did a great job (all by himself!) finished in less than three days, including taking out and reinstalling cabinets Schaber had put in wrong. Based on my experience, if you want to needlessly throw away your good money and waste time, look no further, you've found your guy.

This is a response from Schaber Construction to Mr. Kardos and his fictional fabrication from a project we tried to do for him in February 2012. Work done before was not done by our company, nor was it permitted by the Los Angeles Building Department. This kitchen area was a converted front porch. Illegal plastic electrical boxes were installed. Walls exceptionally out of plumb, and truly out of square. The floor significantly sloped, following the old slope of the outdoor porch. An experienced cabinet installer can overcome these conditions and more, but these are a Time and Materials contract when these conditions are this unpredictable. After we inventoried his complete cabinet shipment, leveled, planned, and laser control lines for installation, and started the first wall of cabinets, he demanded we convert our Time and Material contract to a hard price. Mr. Kardos has fabricated numbers also.
