My father, Wayman H. Parks, was a pipe-fitter in Newport new shipyard for 11 to 12 years. He worked two eight hour shifts until the union came to the shipyard, bringing a large strike around 1967-68. In 1971, my father decided to start his own company named after my mother to attract attention as it was unusual in the 70s to have a woman’s name as a plumbing company. Thus, Betty’s Plumbing and Heating, Air Conditioning, and Electrical was born. I, Wayne H. Parks, would ride along with my dad when he worked for Wilson H. Wright and also when he started his company Betty’s. After turning 14 years old, I worked for my father during summer breaks, and after completing high school, full time. After my father died in 1996 at the young age of 57 years old, my mother took over ownership of the business. I continued working for Betty’s Plumbing and Heating, Air Conditioning, and Electrical until 2012 when a life-changing illness of my mothers caused us to have to sell the business. So I, Wayne H. Parks, started Parks Electric & Mechanical Company in 2012. You could say I was basically born and raised into the plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and electrical business. I learned about the business through years of experience and I have always continued education through trade schools, seminars, manufactures classes, and classes available through our suppliers.
