In the beginning, Tinka Swetland operated a custom closet business and enjoyed travel to third world countries . Upon returning from one of these mission type trips to Haiti she decided to try to make a difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor. The plan was to come up with an idea that she could develop into a commercial success, then forming a foundation to offer this help. Discovering the need was so immediate both here and in the Caribbean she decided to also help as she could, along the way. The first prototype for a Slide Away Bed was offered over Labor day at the Home Show in Miami in 1998 the accolades were astonishing and she knew she was on the right track. With the help of her shop force she set about perfecting the prototype. In the meantime some folks seeing the idea in the Miami Show took it and ran to the patent office. She did not realize this until a year or so later when she took on the patent process and found that her original idea had been stolen and patented…not to worry she had improved it so much that she was able to patent the CitiSleeper as so improved that it was acceptable over and beyond her first prototype. The perfecting process never ends, she claims.
