AERO was chartered in 1957 under the Federal Credit Union Act as a non-profit organization, founded under the concept of "people helping people". Originally sponsored by Sperry Phoenix Company (later became Sperry Flight Systems), the employees formed Sperry Phoenix Employees Federal Credit Union (later shortened to Sperry Federal Credit Union (S.F.C.U.)). Sperry Flight Systems merged with Burroughs Corporation to become Unisys in 1986. Shortly after, Unisys sold Sperry Flight Systems to Honeywell to better align ourselves with our primary membership base changing our name from S.F.C.U. to Honeywell Aerospace Federal Credit Union (H.A.F.C.U.) in November 1999, and then to Aero Federal Credit Union (AERO) in April 2009. As of December 31, 2012, Aero Federal Credit Union had approximately $198 million in assets with 6 branch locations in Arizona and 1 branch in Albuquerque, New Mexico serving over 16,000 members.
