Elijah Medge: Entrepreneurship has taught be to be highly accountable. When you run your own business, the results that your business generates are in one way or other a direct result of your efforts. When things go amazingly, then you are proud of what you've created; but when things don't go amazingly, to are forced to be accountable that you made a wrong decision along the way. I think that when people work for someone else, it's easy to defer responsibility and to blame poor results on circumstances, bosses, or coworkers. But when you work for yourself you really learn to look in the mirror instead of out the window. Question: Besides money, what are your favorite ways to compensate/reward people? Elijah Medge: I think recognition of hard work goes a really long way. It's not always an option to reward someone with money, but verbal praise and an acknowledgement of hard work is sentimental and stays with people. People love being affirmed for their efforts, and this positive reinforcement encourages them to continue working hard. Question: If you could never work again, would you and why? Elijah Medge: It might be nice to take a break for a month or so. I'd use that month to travel and explore the world. However, after that, it would become very frustrating for me to not be productive every day. I feel extremely fulfilled by putting in a hard day's work, and to be deprived of this feeling (after a nice vacation of course) would not be something I would look forward to. Question: Which of your mentors has played the biggest role in molding you into who you are today and why? Elijah Medge: I think that my father has played the biggest role in my development. I've surrounded myself with many successful people throughout my life, but I don't think I've seen a better display of character, a solution-oriented mindset, grace under pressure, and strong values than my father. He has always supported everyone around him and has always made it seem as though that was his given responsibility, instead of a chore. He is an example I try to emulate daily.
