Smith, began his firefighter EMT career in a suburban area outside of Portland, Oregon in 1983 as a student firefighter with Happy Valley RFPD (now part of Clackamas Fire District #1). “In the cool climates of NW Oregon, we used to put the IV fluids on the defroster vents to warm them on the way to a call,” he recalls.
