I hired Anne Skalka to do my taxes and got ripped off. I went to her specifically because my previous accountant refused to put in business deductions I had claimed for years before. I met Anne in early December, explained that the deductions issue was the most important thing, she said “Well, it could go either way, but I’m going to be more aggressive and claim the deductions.” Months passed, I provided more information to complete my returns, and in March began asking to see my returns so I could review in case I had questions. Anne refused to let me see them, saying “it’s not our practice.” In the end, Anne made me pay before letting me see them – on April 14, one day before the filing deadline. To my astonishment, the deductions were NOT there, costing me considerably more money in taxes. When I called to ask WTF, Anne explained that after we met in December, she consulted with others who told her they were not deductible. I thought this was odd: Is she not the expert? And she had five months to tell me, but did not, made me pay and only when I saw the mistake and asked did she tell me. In the end, I had to hire another accountant who did take the deductions, who explained it’s no problem, that Anne probably just did not want to risk an audit because then she gets pulled in as the accountant who prepared the returns. I believe Anne acted in bad faith and deliberately did not tell me to get my money.
