Customer reviews on Yelp can make or break a company's online reputation. Yelp ratings even appear on Google search results pages. It's not something your small business can afford to ignore. Claiming or adding your business listing to Yelp gives you ownership over your company's profile on the internet's best-known review site and it will boost your visibility in the most important search engines.

Go to https://biz.yelp.com to see if your basic company info is already listed on Yelp, or if you will need to set up a business profile from scratch. In the search bar, type your company's name and location, then click the "Get Started" button.

One of three things will happen next: You will see your business listed with the option to claim the listing; you will see your business listed with the option to reclaim the listing; or you will not see your business listed, but will have the chance to add your listing. Some business listings may already have been claimed, whether by previous owners, staff members, or outside marketing firms. If this is the situation you find yourself in, simply click the "Reclaim This Business" button next to your listing. Enter your email, username, and password you want associated with your account. Yelp will then walk you through a series of steps to verify your ownership of the business through the phone number associated with the listing.

There is a small chance that you will find your business is "Already Claimed." If you feel this is in error, or if you need to have a new administrator added to your business profile, enter your information in the Yelp support page for assistance.

To claim an existing, unclaimed listing for your business, click the "Claim This Business" button next to your listing. The next screen will prompt you to create a free user account using your email; a second screen will prompt you to enter your name and a password. Once an existing Yelp listing is claimed or reclaimed, Yelp administrators will verify and approve your listing for publication on the site. Once approved, you can begin adding photos, your company logo and begin interacting with customer reviews through your Yelp page.

If no listing exists that matches with your company info, this screen will appear. Click the "Add Your Business to Yelp" button.

Complete all of the fields in the "Add Your Business" screen that appears. Use a broad description of your industry in the "Categories" section. A drop-down menu of possible categories will appear; select the description that best describes your products or services.

Click the "Add business" button when you have entered your business info. Remember to list all of your information accurately and make sure it's identical with the way your company is listed on your website, social media platforms, and all other online directories. Consistent business info across all of your listings demonstrates to search engines that you are a trusted and legitimate company, and it will boost your visibility in search results. Check your email inbox for the Yelp verification message, pictured below. Your listing will not be visible on Yelp until your company info is verified and approved by Yelp moderators. Confirm your email by clicking the "Confirm email address" in Yelp's email message.

The link will redirect you to Yelp's verification page, pictured below. Enter your name, create a password and click "Done." Yelp will approve your listing over the course of several days. Yelp will email you when your listing is approved, with a link that allows you to claim the listing. Once approved, you can begin adding photos, your company logo and begin interacting with customer reviews through your Yelp page.

Remember these best practices as you build your Yelp profile and begin interacting with customers on the review site:

  • As with all business listings in online directories and social media profiles, keeping your contact information, address and business hours up-to-date and consistent with the information displayed on your website is essential.
