Keen A. Umbehr was a trashman for 17 years before returning to college at the age of 40 and earning his law degree seven years later. While working as a trashman, Umbehr wrote a weekly newspaper column which often criticized the actions of the local board of county commissioners. The commissioners ultimately terminated Keen Umbehr's trash collection contract. In 1991, Umbehr filed a Section 1983 civil rights lawsuit, alleging that the contract was terminated in retaliation for the exercise of his First Amendment right of free speech. The case ended up at the United States Supreme Court which ruled 7-2 in favor of Umbehr and private contractors across the country.
