Obstructive sleep apnea is a blockage of the upper airway during sleep, which causes you to periodically stop breathing. The airway is blocked when the base of the tongue presses on the soft palate. This cuts off air to the lungs, causing blood oxygen to drop, which triggers your brain to wake up! This happens and your breathing returns to normal. Most of the time you don't even know you're waking up. In severe cases this cycle can repeat several hundred times an hour.
