In a nutshell, Wyoming SLP is dedicated to assessing each individual's special needs and abilities; identifying a professional treatment plan that is workable for each unique individual; implementing the plan in the home, office, or clinic setting with comprehensive case management; and providing convenient after-school, evening, and Saturday services as well as weekday sessions. In addition to speech therapy we also assess and treat reading disorders and help with IEP/IFSP meetings.
As a child or as an adult nothing is more important than understanding others and being understood. However, to those with speech, language or educational delays/disorders, communication may be very difficult. For those who have difficulties with communication in central Wyoming, options for treatment are very limited; if they are under the age of 5 and IF they meet certain strict criteria, they may see an SLP at a center for child development or CDC for a few minutes once or twice a month, often in the active classroom; if they are in school they may see a speech therapist IF they test below a certain level, IF the issue is 'educationally related' and IF English is their first language; or after a traumatic event, an adult may see an SLP in the hospital or nursing home. Where do all of the other people that need help go? What if the SLP at the CDC, school, or hospital has such a high caseload that you or your child is only seen once or twice a week or even month? This is the large gap the Wyoming SLP is trying to fill. We do not want to replace SLPs at the CDC, in the school system or in medical settings but we want to work with them to augment what their current clients are receiving as well as to provide services to those who would otherwise be left without an option.
Another area where Wyoming kids seem to be falling through the cracks is in the area of reading disorders especially one commonly known as Dyslexia. Often remediation for this problem is to slow down the pace in reading when in reality the foundational reading skills just need to be strengthened in order for the child to become a more efficient reader. With these foundational skills increased, a child may no longer require Title 1 or special education services.
