Right after graduating with a BS in Biology from the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Karen decided to become the first of the four siblings to move away from Charleston. It seems her career was a lot less about Biology and a lot more about food, wine, and travel. Right after graduating with a BS in Biology from the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Karen decided to become the first of the four siblings to move away from Charleston. It seems her career was a lot less about Biology and a lot more about food, wine, and travel. She was quickly on airplanes and in hotels and rental cars and away from family and friends more often than she was home. Since 2007, Karen started staying in vacation rentals to have a more comfortable place to stay and work for extended periods of time. It also allowed her life partner, Mike, along with friends, to sometimes meet for fun and relaxation. She realized that in the first 20-years of her career, she had been missing her family, friends and the comforts of home. Back in 2006, Karen bought her first vacation rental, a small condo in Charleston, SC, which she furnished just like a place where she would want to stay while on the road. The super-comfortable furnishings reminded Karen of her favorite places: Italy, Napa, CA, and Charleston, SC. She bought the plush towels, along with the best-quality mattresses, and high-quality linens, so her guests could feel like they were staying in a five-star resort. The kitchen was equipped with cookware and cutlery for guests to cooks for their college-aged students when they stayed for a Parents’ Weekend, or to grill steaks and drinking wine for a multi-generational family reunion. Karen wanted this vacation rental to feel just like home. Right away, the condo received all five star reviews and the guests were filling up the weeks so quickly that Karen bought a second condo in the same unit, and then a third one. After nine years, she rolled together the profits from the sale of these condos into one vacation rental on the Isle of Palms, SC, where big families or groups of families and friends could gather and share their friendship. Karen named this vacation rental home, “Carolina Elegance,” Carolina Elegance is conveniently located very close to the beach, is about 20 minutes from downtown Charleston and 30 miles from the Charleston International Airport. A short year later, Karen and Mike bought a second vacation beach rental on the same island, in the Wild Dunes resort, and they named it “Carolina Elegance North.
