In 1976, his father Dillard purchased Berkeley Marine in Moncks Corner. Clyde went with him, working with his father for almost four years.
In 1979 his father opened Dillard's Marine, and again Clyde and his father worked together until they sold the marine to The Marine Center in 1984.
After completing his two-year non-competition contract, Dillard re-opened Dillard's Marine in 1986. For the next ten years, Clyde worked closely with his father until deciding to go back to school at TTC to attempt a degree in Psychology.
ABOUT
After working for his father both full time and part time for almost 24 years, his father passed away in 2000.
With the passing of his father, Clyde went to work for Seels outboard and was joined by his 15-year-old son Dillard in 2001. Like working for his father, the opportunity to work with his son was even more enjoyable. In 2004 Clyde got his first business license working mobile and getting most of his help from his son Dillard.
His son Dillard tried to break away from the marine business getting his degree in Criminal Justice, but the satisfaction of getting his certifications as a Johnson / Evinrude mechanic and working with his father was a little more gratifying, as they were sharing the same enjoyment Clyde did with his father back in 1976. At 32 (in 2019), Dillard had over 19 years of boat service under his belt. Over half his life.
In 2005 Liberty Marine was opened for business.
The location at 4406 Hwy 162 Hollywood, SC 29449 opened in June of 2007. Since the senior Dillard Umphlet began working at Hi-Way Marine in 1960, serving customers for over 50 years, the Umphlet's have helped thousands of people enjoy their boats and enjoy them worry-free.
