Unfortunately my wife and I have NOTHING positive to say regarding the workmanship and "final" product handed to us by Renovation Man (Ilan Gerlitz). In fact, I am driven to write this scalding review because my only other alternative would be to sue Mr. Gerlitz in civil court for the incredible sum he charged us for what ended up being substandard results. In fact, I will list several salient unacceptable instances of shoddy workmanship so that readers will understand that this is a bona fide review meant to protect the public as opposed to an emotionally driven revenge review. 1. KITCHEN: Mr Gerlitz promised us a high end beautiful kitchen with only "top of the line" cabinetry. What we ended up with was, by our new kitchen designer's estimation, the LOWEST grade cabinets available. The crown molding was made from different material than the cabinetry itself which resulted in color mismatch throughout the kitchen. The cabinets were not aligned properly, such that the doors hung in an uneven manner and were not flush. There was a large gap between the fill in and housing of the cabinet which held the double oven. The door and drawer handles were improperly drilled into the cabinet doors and drawers such that there was noticeable splintering and cracking of the wood on the inside of the cabinets in nearly every door. In some instances the workers attempted to hide this unsightly result with white paint as opposed to replacing the doors and giving us a properly finished product which is what we paid for. The sink that was inserted was flimsy stainless steel, only 18 gague and immediately stained with water spots. Rather than replace the sink with one of a better quality, Mr Gerltz insisted that the stains were because of the water. We requested a cabinet be built up for placement of a microwave with trim kit. This was not done properly. Mr. Gerlitz's solution to this problem was not to build up the cabinet in a professional manner such as would be done by a carpenter, wood worker or cabinet maker, but, rather, he stacked extra pieces of wood and a piece of floor tile to support the microwave. The microwave installer from Best Buy was flabbergasted by this and would not work with it as it was. This type of shoddy workmanship and purposeful lack of attention to detail is NOT what we paid for. When I confronted Mr. Gerlitz over these issues his response was not to refund our money, but to offer other services free of charge ie; painting of the exterior of the house. In the end, when time came for these services he conveniently forgot this promise and requested payment again. 2. COURTYARD Mr. Gerlitz assured us that he could create a concrete porch for us from a sunken courtyard area filled previously with soil, rocks and pebbles. The people he hired to do this job were clearly unprofessional from the inception. The head guy was drinking beer on the job and slurring his words. He spoke mostly in profanities and his helpers were two high school students off from school due to coronavirus. These people poured concrete right into the grass on our front lawn, destroying it. They did not place rebar grids into the bed of the concrete, which is standard practice. When it dried it was uneven, covered in craters and not properly pitched for rain drainage. Mr. Gerlitz admitted that he regretted using these people for this job yet he has not refunded my money nor has he replaced the grass that was destroyed in the process. We moved on to a professional paving company to complete the job to our satisfaction at additional cost. We are still waiting for compensation from Mr. Gerlitz. 3. Fine details: (A) Mr. Gerlitz renovated our bathroom. His tile layer cemented the drain grill into place in the shower. How are we supposed to lift it when the drain clogs and requires snaking? When the time comes, we will have to break it open and this of course will damage the shower floor tile work. Again, we will have to shell out more money for collateral damage which will inevitably result from initially poor workmanship. How can a professional tile layer make such an egregious error? (B) When initially tiling our floors, many tiles were chipped and misoriented. Initially he replaced some tiles but then was reluctant to replace additional tiles. His explanation was that it would be "too much work". Only after requesting that these tiles be replaced numerous times did he finally acquiesce and concede to do what any vendor should have done immediately....we paid a lot of money and the customer is always right. In addition to the above examples of terrible workmanship I also was dismayed that Mr. Gerlitz simply asks for money without providing a contract or written, itemized invoice distinctly outlining hours of labor and cost of materials. He prefers to operate on a "trust" basis whereby you pay him and he provides a product. Our experience, however, was one of serious monetary loss since he betrayed our trust and gave us a substandard and unsatisfactory product. Without itemized receipts, we are not even sure where, and to what, exactly our hard earned money went. In a few words....AVOID Renovation Man at all cost. The workmanship is poor, the professionalism is absent, there is no attention to detail and, worst of all, there is no real accountability.
