He walked out on a job the day he was supposed to start it, leaving me to scramble to find someone else to do the work in time to move in. Four days before the job was scheduled, he was supposed to come by to see whether the part of the floor needed additional prep work. He didn't come by because it wasn't close enough to the job he was working on that day and said it was fine if he checked it out the day he was supposed to start. When he arrived, he said 80 square feet needed some plywood to make that part of the subfloor even with the rest of the subfloor but, because the addition was uneven, it might not work. He wanted $500-1000 to buy and install 2 sheets of plywood over less than 80 square feet. I said $500 was okay but not $1000. He said lumber costs a lot right now. I said I know it costs 4x of what is normal right now, but plywood is about $35 for a 4x8 sheet, so 4x doesn't get us to an extra $500. Then he said the extra was for his time to go pick it up. I offered to cancel a work meeting and leave immediately to pick it up myself, and pay him an extra $500 just to install it, which is a generous amount. Then he said he wanted to start sanding the rest of the floor while he waited. I was worried because he said even with the plywood, the floor might not be even, so I didn't want the job to start until we knew the plywood prep worked. To be fair, he changed his tune and starting promising that whatever he did with the plywood would be fine, but I didn't know if I could count on that since he was changing his story completely. He had changed his story on a number of things already, so I was starting to doubt that he would keep his word if I depended on it. He said he would walk away if he couldn't start sanding immediately. Even though I was being calm and just saying no to having him start sanding my floors before the prep of the nook was complete and we knew it was workable, he said I was being a emotional because I am a woman and he didn't want to deal with someone emotional. I swallowed that because I needed my floors done, and I offered to let him deal with my husband from now on. My husband was firm that he could do the whole $7250 job we agreed to once the plywood prep was finished for an extra $500. He said he'd walk away if he couldn't start sanding while we picked up the plywood. So we let him walk. But then he started to cry because his wife is pregnant and he needs the money. I don't want to accuse him of being "emotional" for that because I think men should be able to cry without being belittled, but I also think women shouldn't be belittled as "emotional." We said we are still happy to have him start the moment we come back with the plywood. He said no and left. Now, after waiting for over a month for him to start the job, I have to start from square one to find someone else to finish my floors in time for me to move in. I would not recommend working with him.
