Now, how many of us actually consider the type of password we create to keep all this personal and financial information safe and secret from outside prowlers? Do most of us even know what is actually a “safe and strong” password? More than likely if we thought it up ourselves, it is extremely weak and can be cracked in less than 1 day (on average). We spend more time planning vacations, choosing what car to buy or even taking upwards of 1 year to plan a wedding. So why do we not take the same safe approach to protecting our hard earned money and personal identity that can be stolen with a single key stroke on a computer nowadays! Truth is, passwords need 2 characteristics to deter hackers. First, they must be Unique ( meaning not available in any of the publicly available lists of previously hacked passwords). Second, they much contain a lot of “entropy” (simply this means that it would take a powerful computer a very long time to guess the password). Basically a high entropy password is a long password (or passphrase). Studies have shown that most people are not very good at thinking up unique, long passwords/phrases on their own. The reason is because we as humans tend to have similar behaviors and responses. We tend to select words, phrases that have some relation back to our own lives or general thoughts/ideas/statements/quotes that we have heard, used or seen though our daily lives.
