Walking into Royal Press on 12th Street wasn't just a trip to a print shop; it was an experience. While the partners desk in the corner of the entry was all business, the workshop area was where the real magic happened. It was a "true maker's space" probably before that term even existed -- a maze of heavy-duty printing presses, the distinct smell of fresh ink and ozone, and a vibe that was purely Tampa. The walls of the workshop told their own story, lined with 80s-era glamour photos. They added a splash of character to the industrial space, serving as a backdrop to the constant chop-chop rhythm of the machines. Technologically, the shop was a fascinating bridge between two worlds. In one room sat an iconic Mac SE/30 for churning out layouts and graphics. In later days, you'd see an iMac in the room across from it. The SE/30 was the cutting edge of the time, sitting like the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol surrounded by a fortress of paper and boxes threatening to topple onto its workstation. It was located just down the short hallway from the production area, where heavy machines like the nuArc camera and ABDick presses were exposing film and printing like the Fed prints money. But the real star of the show was the owner, Iradj "Jay" Shirmohammad himself. He was a force of nature, often seen navigating the shop floor while conducting business over a giant brick cell phone. In an age before everyone had a slim smartphone in their pocket, that brick was a symbol of his hustle, and it meant he was always accessible and always ready to solve a problem for a client. Royal Press was a place where technology met tradition, where the owner was larger than life, and where every corner of the shop had a personality of its own. It's those specific details: the hum of the Mac's laser printer, the stacks of paper and bottles of ink, and Iradj with his brick phone -- that made it the best shop in town.
