I hired Don Ouimette to build a staircase in our new home in Beaufort SC. It’s not his best work to be sure. He’s capable of doing it correctly, if he would just develop a plan. Instead, he seems to come to work each day not really knowing what he’s going to do. It shows too. The balusters are out of plumb, and Unevenly spaced. His method of connecting the handrail leaves screw heads sanded down and shiny, so you get to see them forever. He sets the posts last, which is a first for me, as he then struggles to make sense of their placement. When he finished and I questioned him about these things, he said he preferred to just walk away silently, even though he could say something and oh, Congratulations! I’m the first time he wasn’t paid in full in over 3000 sets of stairs. A good painter could fix most of the unforeseen issues he had to struggle around. ( His words ) I’m going to hire another company to rip out the railing he did. I’m sure it will cost more than the 3000 dollars I owe him, but hanging beach towels over the railing for the rest of my life to hide the blaring defects doesn’t seem possible. I was a building contractor on the Philadelphia Main Line for 40+ years. He wouldn’t even have a job if he did that sort of work where I came from, and he knows it. Too embarrassed to come back and fix anything, because looking at it again will only remind him, how poorly it’s done. If I was you, I would hire another company. He’s too disorganized and sloppy.
