Are you tired of feeling the Bible thumped over your head, of being told that you are going to hell, of hearing mean-spirited messages coming from the pulpit that condemn people for who they love or because of how they identify? In a culture that increasingly identifies as “spiritual but not religious,” are you interested in finding a church home that is both authentic and embracing of change? Are you eager to find a place where your questions are encouraged, your doubt is not used as a weapon against you, and where you can gather together with persons from all walks of life? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. There are many different aspects of religious life that draw people to First Presbyterian Church of Yellow Springs. For some, it is our wonderful music, produced under the direction of our Director of Music, James Johnston. For others, it is our weekly Passing of the Peace, which can go on for as long as ten minutes. For others, it is our commitment to social justice and the leadership of our bold, passionate pastor Rev. Aaron Maurice Saari.
At First Presbyterian, all are invited to come as they are and to make themselves part of the community. Each week, we gather after worship for a Friendship Time, when people are able to talk, have a bite to eat, and reflect upon the worship. It is not uncommon for Westminster Hall, our gathering space, to be filled with children racing about, even as our elders make their way to tables with canes in one hand and plates of food in the other.

The truth is, the face of the Church is changing. It has to, as the old models of religion do not address the deep spiritual needs of most people today. A faith community should not be about marketing or gimmicks; a faith community should not rely upon false promises and grandiose claims. A faith community should be honest and sincere about what it is and the type of people who attend.
