Unfortunately, my father (a respected & celebrated Detroiter) had an unpleasant experience today. (Objectively) He was denied access to the restroom as a returning customer awaiting service & received dismissive treatment. The first time, his haircut was fine & he had access to use the restroom. Today, he entered the shop (there were customers already inside) & he saw that the restroom door was open, there was a note on the door but it wasn't visible until they decided to change access after he arrived...by CLOSING THE DOOR...making it clear after HIS arrival that it was closed/inaccessible. In addition, the demeanor of the "father" barber was very dismissive/rude. Once he was done cutting a customer's hair, instead of taking my father in his chair, he left... HE LEFT THE SHOP...& my father waited & received his haircut from the "daughter" barber (who ensures her pride for being an American is known). Both were quiet or said very little to him, which is a contrast to their interactions with "other" customers. These statements aren't implications. However, they are accounts of my father's experience (as an African American) who was made to feel uncomfortable during his second visit at R & J Barbershop. As a celebrated member of Detroit, my father has entered & interacted with many people across many cultures. This was CLEARLY inappropriate, inexcusable & unacceptable...& should be made known for any customers "like him", so they are aware of the environment they are entering. And it was disappointingly clear that they did NOT want my father there. Please do not delete/remove this review, as it is authentic & contains no inappropriate content. This should serve as a reminder... (Maybe the father had an emergency before my father was to sit in his chair? Maybe they remembered the restroom door was open, only when my father entered? Perhaps something personal happened to them both, where their demeanors changed the moment my father arrived?)
