Dr. Foster is a specialist in male psychology. Problem areas include relationships, behavior, school or work performance, substance use/abuse, and - in the case of teenagers and men in their twenties - with cementing an identity in order to be more productive and happier in whatever they choose to do. Dr. Foster also counsels many couples, either for specific problems or in the deepening of the connection when the relationship seems flat. Dr. Foster is trained and well-experienced in the treatment of sexual matters, including sexual dysfunction and more general sexual concerns and struggles. Therapy can be shorter-term and highly-focused, or longer-term and more in-depth, depending upon the person's goals. Dr. Foster has expertise in working with more serious diagnoses and medications

Dr. Foster resumes his longstanding Lafayette practice in August, 2016, after a year of consulting in Europe. He is back until late 2017, and is accepting clients who will benefit from short-term therapy. In this type of therapy, Dr. Foster is active during meetings, encouraging clients to view their situation in a wider context, and to practice these alternative ways of thinking and acting between meetings. It is an approach rooted in the here and now: any focused attention on childhood occurs only when the therapy encounters a major stumbling block. Short term therapy is appropriate for: INDIVIDUALS with depression/anxiety from specific causes; indecision in relationships, work, school; problems communicating/resolving conflicts; codependency; sexual concerns. COUPLES with infidelity; commitment issues; communication difficulties; maintaining closeness throughout parenting stresses; FAMILY issues: ongoing conflicts with a child; positive discipline with limits/boundaries; developmental stage problems. In addition to years in private practice, Dr. Foster worked at Kaiser, directing their post-doctoral training program, and in inpatient settings, developing expertise in focused therapy. He is experienced with more serious diagnoses and with psychiatric medication. He has taught for The University of Maryland, and has conducted numerous trainings in psychotherapy and diagnosis.
