Harness makers and saddlers are part of Dick's family's history dating back to the New England Colonies. He began his apprenticeship when he was 15. From 1959 to 1965, he studied under four Porter saddlemakers in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. After completing his doctorate in 1969, he pursued a dual career as a research\exploration geologist and as a part-time custom saddlemaker.
