Years later, after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, he received a D.D.S. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dentistry. He resumed his studies at Buffalo, receiving an M.D. degree from the School of Medicine in 1973, after a tour of duty in the United States Navy. He then completed residencies in surgery at the University of Kentucky and plastic surgery at the Medical College of Ohio under the guidance of the greatly revered John C. Kelleher, Sr.
