In 1990, Rock In Prevention, a non-profit organization, was established by national certified addictions counselor and recording artist Pat McManus in Iowa. The primary mission of Rock In Prevention is to help children choose a healthy and positive life by teaching them the methods and skills to prevent bullying and alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse with the use of music and the arts. This organization has abetted more than 1.5 million children since its establishment. The organization's online curriculum, Rock Digi, utilizes the power of music to teach Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and life skills for success for grades 2-12 in an effort improve the mental health of all students, reduce bullying and drug use, and create positive a school climate in schools. The organization's goal is to help students learn skills to be resilient so they are able to deal with the ups and downs of life. Some of the topics covered in Rock Digi are: coping with grief and loss, empathy, finding your spark, positive self-talk, self-acceptance, anger management, relationship skills, responsible decision making, and other social emotional learning skills. The organization understands that schools are prioritizing implementing strategies to meet students' social, emotional, mental health, and academic needs.
