The crew knows what they are doing but Rod is an "absentee owner." He flies by the seat of his pants and doesn't have good communication skills. Also, he doesn't give you a written estimate--it's a verbal deal. Apparently you have to ask for paperwork or else you don't get it. This is important because I didn't hear what he said about his figures, and was surprised at the final bill. A poor business practice not to give written estimates. When I first called him about a job, I specifically told him to call me before coming to my house to make sure I was home. Instead, he just showed up on my door step. I went ahead and hired him and told him to have his crew call before they came. Same thing as before--they just rolled up with all their equipment without any prior notice. During the job, I asked if they would throw a few small dead branches I had collected into their shredder. A crew member said they couldn't do that because it could damage the machine. Later, they collected some dead branches the same size from the tree they were cutting and threw them in their shredder. Guess the machine is sensitive about who throws in the branches! When the job was done, Rod was nowhere to be found, and the crew had to wait 20 minutes in hopes of getting his invoice to pass on to me. They finally left when Rod didn't show up. I couldn't get a bill from them and had to call him. Later, he texted me his bill. Remember, he doesn't do paperwork--it's all in his head, and then he sends you a text image of his bill. This guy totally flies by the seat of his pants, has no communication or planing skills, is very unprofessional and a classical "absentee owner" who underpays his crew of hardworking guys while he jumps around from one job to another. I will never have him do any more work for me.
