Connie S. McCaa, M.D., Ph.D, is seeing patients again at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She returns to UMMC after more than a half-dozen years in private practice in the Jackson area, when she had two former clinics, at St. Dominic Hospital and her own LASIK Laser Eye Center. For 12 consecutive years, Dr. McCaa was named by peers as one of the Best Doctors in America. Her reputation grew as one of the leading refractive surgeons in the United States. Then, for medical reasons, Dr. McCaa took a year off work during 2013 and closed her private practice. She again is Professor of Ophthalmology at UMMC. She examines, diagnoses and treats eye patients, and performs minor surgeries. She no longer performs LASIK and major surgeries. Dr. McCaa is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is fellowship trained. She received her medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1977. She received a PhD in biochemistry from 
the University of Mississippi. Her ophthalmology residency was completed at UMMC in 1981. She completed a cornea, external disease and refractive surgery fellowship at the Louisiana State University Eye Center, New Orleans, under Herbert Kaufman, MD, and 
Marguerite McDonald, MD, in 1985. During her earlier tenure at UMMC, Dr. McCaa served as Director of the Division of Cornea, External Disease & Refractive Surgery for 25 years. She was one of the first LASIK surgeons in the U.S. and performed the procedure on thousands of patients. Also a leading corneal transplant surgeon, Dr. McCaa historically performed the most such surgeries annually in Mississippi. Dr. McCaa has been active in the Mississippi Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Association (the state ophthalmology society) and has served as its president. She also has been a Councilor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She received the Secretariat Award from AAO and has served on the Nominating Committee and the Credentials Committee of the AAO Council.
