I'd like to think of myself as somewhat a connoisseur of short-order eats. My diet throughout high school and college consisted mainly of hamburgers, fries, milkshakes, and pizza.
So when I moved to Milford, Illinois over seven years ago, I thought to myself, "Well, that's the end of good fast-food, if I don't want to travel an hour to Kankakee or Champaign."
The first time I went in, I noticed the menu board advertised a 1/2-lb. burger. That's one-half! As in 8-oz. pre-cooked weight. I didn't know you could even cook an 8-oz. burger all the way through. The closest I'd ever come to was Ken's Beef and Dogs in Streamwood, IL. There you could get a 1/3-lb. burger.
So let me just tell you that Southside has the best burgers anywhere if you don't want to drive 3 hours up to Chicago. As a matter of fact, Portillo's burgers aren't as good, and that's really saying something.
Imagine my pleasant surprise when Southside put a real, live, fresh red tomato slice on my burger. Ok, so I had to pay an extra 10 cents for it, but hey, it's so good, I'd pay a dollar for a good tomato slice.
The burger is so good. I think they use local meat, which is awesome, because I love the idea of supporting the local economy.
The 1/2-lb. Burger Basket with fries and coleslaw will stuff you to the fullest, but the experience is almost mystical.
Mmm...I think I'll order one now.
