He told stories of his childhood in South Louisiana when he would swim out into the bayou to retrieve a stalk of sugarcane from a barge on its way to Steen's Syrup Mill.He told of how during the Spindletop Oil Boom, following the Lucas Gusher, the mules had to be replaced with oxen because the mules could not pull their suction cup hooves out of the gumbo mud.
