The raku process of introducing combustible material to beads that are hot produces surface irregularities and can produce small chips, thermal shock lines, color transfer pin holes and crazing. Raku produces soot, most of which can be washed off, but some remains. I am trying to achieve the look of primitive or ancient beads. They are a modern twist on trade beads. I do wash and rinse all raku beads with baking soda and file any areas that are rough. The black coloration comes from the absorption of the combustible material into the surface of the bead.
