We want to help you accomplish your goal regarding substance use. We are not a twelve-step agency, although we do believe clients should seek community support from various places including the many Anonymous programs and the SMART program. Your counseling sessions will include discussions of programs that are available in our area and we will use tools from various programs including 12-step, SMART, and Moderation Management. The agency uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) as our theoretical base. The MI helps us “meet you where you are at” and helps you establish your goals. It also helps with engagement in the counseling process as you are the most important person in the room and MI is “all about you.” CBT is used to provide rational thinking skills in all areas of your life. When we use rational thinking we are able to act rather than react. A well thought out act generally leads to more positive outcomes than reacting. Or, as several historical figures has stated, “fail to plan, plan to fail.” During your time at Abacus Evaluations, we will help you develop a comprehensive chemical use change plan that is designed by you. Your designing the plan makes it a plan that fits your specific needs. You will be provided with relapse prevention skills and new insight into thinking patterns that affect your life.
