I forgot the combination to the safe, having changed it the previous day. I’d written it down somewhere but had misplaced the slip of paper. One, I did not have access to the business contracts, money and other documents locked in the safe. Two, there was this ever-present possibility that the parchment with the combination on it had found its way to the wrong hands.
